Organization Overview:
Michelson Found Animals (MFA) is a nonprofit supporting pet owners and animal welfare organizations through our mission to Save Pets & Enrich Lives. With two distinct Adopt & Shop locations in Culver City and Lakewood, and programs throughout L.A. County, the organization offers pet adoptions, supplies, microchipping and an online registry and grooming and dog daycare (Culver City), with proceeds going back to the organization. All of our pets are rescued from local shelters, which supports our goal to reduce animal euthanasia and allows customers to be part of the mission. Since its inception in 2005, MFA has committed more than $3 million in spay/neuter grants, protected more than 1.5 million pets through the microchip registry, reached more than 300,000 hours of service from volunteers and, most notably, adopted out more than 25,000 animals from Adopt & Shop stores and events to loving forever homes. Internship Program Overview:
As the Recruitment & Training Development Intern, you will be working in conjunction with the Volunteer Department to create and expand a recruitment strategy, and develop training materials to improve volunteer retention. Michelson Found Animals Adopt & Shop locations rely heavily on volunteer support, and are only able to care for its pets, adopt them out and accomplish goals with the help of these volunteers. The goal of this position is to create and implement a strategy that involves a mix of research, outreach and event participation, along with a new ambassador program and training to bring in a variety of new volunteers, and increase retention through advocacy and incentives.

The Recruitment & Training Development Intern position is an unpaid volunteer position with a nonprofit organization. We are happy to work with students so that they may receive academic credit or outside funding for their work.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct recruitment research and collect information focused on any the following:
    • Community groups and organizations in the Westside and Long Beach areas
    • Colleges in surrounding areas
    • Groups with adult members (target age group 18+)
  • Outreach to Potential Groups:
    • Send emails and make phone calls to encourage new volunteers
    • Attend community events to recruit new volunteers and spread awareness for Michelson Found Animals
  • Attend and lead various off-site presentations and training, including:
    • Host Orientations in Culver City and/or Lakewood
    • Present volunteer opportunities to classes at local schools and colleges, or businesses
    • Attend Career and College Fairs to recruit volunteers
 
  • Help develop Volunteer Ambassador Program
    • Create training materials for current volunteers with guidance from Volunteer Coordinators
    • Implement program and recruit volunteers from within organization
Requirements:
  • 2-4 years of post high school education completed
  • Communications, Business or similar major
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Resourceful and can work independently
  • Self-starter, well-organized, and able to work independently
  • Interest in nonprofit administration and/or training and staff development
 
Length of Project/Hour Requirement:
  • 8-12 weeks (based on availability) or in accordance with for-credit internship requirements
  • 10-15 hours per week (based on availability)
