Summary of Position:
Michelson Found Animals and Adopt & Shop (MFA’s retail program) seeks a skilled and motivated individual to join our team as an Animal Care Manager.  This position is responsible for supporting the culture of Found Animals while overseeing all animals at our Culver City location.  The Animal Care Manager has oversight of all day-to-day operations of our Animal Care and Kitten Foster (KFP) departments including staff and volunteer management, foster coordination and program logistics.  This position reports to the Chief Program Officer. This is a full-time position and this position requires working evening, weekend and holiday hours.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Works collaboratively with all staff members to achieve the completion of daily work assignments, following proper department protocols; has accountability for measurable results in these areas.
  • Develops and maintains proper protocol for animal handling, care, feeding, and administering medicine.
  • Provides world class care to all animals in our KFP and Animal Care Departments, which is to include but is not limited to the following:
    • Kennel Cleaning
    • Administering Medication (as needed)
    • Socializing Animals
  • Oversee the safe and effective transport and care of animals.
  • Supervise the Sourcing Associate, ensuring that we have adoptable animals for both Adopt & Shop locations.
  • Assist with strategic planning and reporting.
  • Gather data, survey target populations, and perform analysis to understand needs and how they will affect the KFP department.
  • Ensures the sound implementation of plans, appropriate documentation, and appropriate risk mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Pursue and maintain relationships with corporate, municipal, and non-profit partners to support KFP program activities.
  • Provide management and operational support to programs including: strategic planning, budgeting, outreach, volunteer development, etc.
  • Manage and execute the budgeting, delivery, and evaluation of the KFP and Animal Care departments.
  • Communicate with the team regarding Animal Care and KFP performance to goals.
  • Conduct the review process for Animal Care and KFP staff, provide timely feedback daily in both a positive and coaching light as needed and draft and deliver corrective action as needed.
  • Monitor ongoing progress and make adjustments when required or proactively anticipate, identify and resolve program issues.
  • Able to work under pressure to prioritize and manage workload, manage simultaneous tasks and meet deadlines within a fast paced and changing environment.
  • Stay abreast of association industry news and engage in professional development to keep current with changes in the field.
  • Watch for and recognize safety/security risks and communicate them effectively in order to prevent injury.
  • Provide feedback to peers and the Volunteer Team, offering constructive criticism and praise to train and develop all staff within Adopt & Shop
  • Willingness to ask questions and seek additional information either through KFP, Animal Care, Adopt & Shop or independent research.
  • Stay informed with what is going on with KFP and Animal Care, through the communication tools provided.
  • Proactively seek solutions to challenges in Animal Care and KFP and share with CPO and Store Management.
  • Cross train in other A&S roles and perform duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 lbs.
  • Rarely lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

Required Experience/Education:
  • Minimum of 3-5 year animal experience.
  • Staff and volunteer supervision experience required.  
  • Animal handling experience in an animal shelter, veterinary office, training or boarding facility.
  • Veterinary Technician experience preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of cats & dogs as companion animals and the ability to recognize change in an animal’s health or demeanor.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare and cat/dog health issues.
  • Comfortable handling cats/dogs of all sizes and breeds.
  • Impartial knowledge of the Los Angeles area shelters and rescues is helpful.
  • Proven ability to handle all aspects of prior job duties and executing them to satisfaction.
  • Proficiency in the GSuite is strongly preferred.
