Job Summary
The Chief of Staff enables the Executive Director to work most effectively by facilitating and coordinating program management, which includes cross-functional programs and communications, along with strategic initiatives that include business development, program development and partnerships. The Chief of Staff organizes and prioritizes critical issues and required information for the Excecutive Director to facilitate efficient decision making. (S)he  provides oversight and guidance to projects of high importance and acts as an advisor to the ED. The COS serves as a primary liaison for internal and external communications providing an additional layer of structure to the business. Additional responsibilities will include experience with business insights, analytics and strategic planning; assembling various dashboards and analyses, and coordinating the company-wide goals process. The COS is a key driver in pushing the company’s goals forward while helping to ensure the corporate structure is performing optimally. (S)he must enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven and results-driven. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, experience working with C and VP levels, comfortable with change and have the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities.
CoS Roles and Responsibilities
  • The selected individual(s) will interface with the majority of the Executive Director’s internal and external contacts. Therefore, must be a phenomenal communicator able to convey the ED’s desired message effectively and demonstrate a high level of emotional-intelligence and integrity.
  • Lead management process on all enterprise projects - ensuring appropriate prioritization, collaboration and effective execution amongst project ownership such that all milestones and objectives are achieved on time and on budget.
  • Execute on projects both as a team lead and as a team member.
  • Ensure the health and connectivity of the organization through maintaining consistency and quality communication channels across all business areas.
  • Translate business direction and critical deliverables to the management team and, where appropriate, to the entire team, mediating issues and providing guidance under the leadership of the ED.
  • The Chief of Staff meets with potential partners and external stakeholders and then decides if the topic is worthwhile for the ED himself/herself to engage in.
Business Development
  • Attend high priority speaking engagements and meetings to help capitalize on introductions and business opportunities.
  • Follow up directly with ED’s relationships, supporting relationship management and cultivation, to identify opportunities for new business, strategic partnerships, investment, or media.
Business Analytics & Cross-Functional Programs
  • Performs research and analysis within the company to support and facilitate cross-functional operations and programs of the business.
  • Ensure communication and oversight on existing programs that require multiple business units to complete a program goal or function.
  • Manage the budget and P&L for the business.
  • Develop a key performance indicators (KPI) dashboard and competitive insights for use by Executive team to manage the business.
  • Establish and lead operating processes and tools for effectively managing the organization, including actively tracking key trends in lagging/leading metrics.
  • Work alongside the Executive team to contribute to strategic projects (including new products and markets) using analytics, research, consumer insights, and collaboration with other teams within the company.


  • BA/BS degree, MBA preferred
  • 2+ years experience at top three consulting firm or investment banking or 5-10 years equivalent experience in one of the following areas: Strategy and Management Consulting, Business Development, Stakeholder and Project Management
  • Experience with animal welfare and/or social enterprise preferred
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative analytics.Deep interest and aptitude in data, metrics, analysis and trends and applied knowledge of measurement, statistics and program evaluation.
  • Experience leading cross cutting functional projects
  • Impeccable written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to use a high degree of confidentiality with sensitive information
  • Ability to attend events outside of office hours and travel as needed
  • Fluency in Google Suite, as well as aptitude for quickly picking up new tech platforms
  • A deeply mature and professional demeanor, coupled with a can-do positive attitude
  • Strong empathy and people skills, and experience leveraging those to build relationships
  • Self-starter who is comfortable working in a start-up environment with a high degree of ambiguity.
